A small maker business at the foot of Blencathra, in the heart of the Lake District.
Slate the Lakes started the way most good things do — making things for friends and family, then realising others might want them too. Based in Threlkeld, a small village beneath the great fell of Blencathra on the edge of the northern Lake District, every piece is designed and made here.
We use a laser cutter to create wall art, maps, coasters and keepsakes from natural materials — oak, birch ply, and real Cumbrian slate. The laser does the precision work, but each piece is hand-finished, checked and packaged individually. No two pieces of slate are the same. No two oak pieces grain exactly the same. That's what makes them worth having.
Threlkeld sits between Blencathra and the A66, with Skiddaw to the west and the Helvellyn range to the south. It's proper Lakeland — fell farmers, old stone walls, red squirrels in the garden if you're lucky. That landscape shapes everything we make: the fell silhouettes, the tarn names, the animals that roam these hills.
If you're passing through on the A66, look out for our roadside stall. Scan the QR code, browse what's there, and pay by card on your phone. No queues, no fuss.
Almost anything we make can be personalised — a name, a farm, a tarn, a short message. We send a proof before we cut, so you know exactly what you're getting. Personalised orders take 3–5 days and are shipped tracked across the UK.
